Dream theater ก่อตั้งเมื่อ 1986 ในนาม Majesty ก่อนเปลี่ยนเปลี่ยนเป็น Dream theaterในเวลาต่อมา เพราะลิขสิทธิ์ชื่อ Majesty ก่อนวงจะออกอัลบั้มแรกในปี 1989 when dream and day unite
ที่มีCharlie Dominici ร้องนำ และ Kavin Moore คีย์บอร์ด แต่อัลบั้มนี้ไปรับผลตอบรับไม่ดีเท่าที่ควร วงจึงได้ไล่ Dominiciออก พร้อมต้องหานักร้องนำและค่ายเพลงใหม่ วงได้James Labrie เป็นนักร้องนำใหม่ วงได้ออกอัลบั้ม images and words ซึ่งเป็นอัลบั้มที่ดีที่สุดของวง
ต่อมามือคีย์บอร์ดของวง Kevin Mooreได้ลาออกจากวงไปในอัลบั้ม awake และวงก็ได้ Derek Sherinian เป็นมือคีย์บอร์ดคนใหม่ในอัลบั้ม falling into infinity แต่ Derek Sherinian ก็ได้ออกจากวงไป และทางวงก็ได้ Jordan Rudessเป็นมือคีย์บอร์ดคนใหม่ในอัลบั้ม metropolis Pt.2 scenes from a memory
ในปี 2010 Mike Portnoy ได้ออกจากวงไปหลังอัลบั้ม black clouds & silver linings ทางวงได้ประกาศหามือกลองคนใหม่และได้ Mike Mangini เป็นมือกลองคนใหม่พร้อมออกอัลบั้ม a dramatic turn of events ก่อนจะลาออกจากวงหลังอัลบั้ม a view from the top of the world
และวงได้ Mike Portnoy กลับมาเป็นมือกลองอีกครั้ง
